Grissom's mission (MR-4) was the second in the series and followed a similar sub-orbital path as Alan Shephard's before him. The Redstone rocket propelled Gus and his craft, Liberty Bell 7, above the atmosphere but fell short of achieving orbit. The launch proceeded smoothly, leading to a brief period of weightlessness and a successful re-entry through the atmosphere. Liberty Bell 7 deployed its main parachute as planned and landed within approximately three kilometers of the Navy recovery team. After securing the spacecraft, Gus awaited rescue but encountered an unexpected event when the explosive hatch blew off, causing water to flood in. Grissom managed to escape but faced a close call with drowning in his spacesuit. Liberty Bell 7 filled with seawater and sank to the depths of the Atlantic Ocean, marking NASA's only spacecraft loss

Technical Specifications

What's needed to fly

C5-3 Engines

C6-3 Engines

Recovery Wadding

Porta-Pad II Launch Pad and Electron Beam Launch Controller

Instructions

Download Instructions

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0811/2871/8625/files/mercury-redstone-4--liberty-bell-7_photo_1_458564b6-340d-40c0-bacd-c12b8977fd03.jpg?v=1733444788
